Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel guide publisher, just released it’s Best in Travel 2018 guide, including the top 10 countries, cities, regions and “best value” destinations to visit in the year ahead.
Claiming the no. 2 spot on the top 10 cities list is our favorite city and “America’s most ambitious renovation project”: Detroit.
“Americans love a good comeback story, and Detroit is writing a mighty one as it transforms itself from a punchline to a cool-cat destination.” -Lonely Planet
Investments in the city, new public works projects, energetic creatives and fired up entrepreneurs are but a few examples of the city on the rise, according to the guide.
Highlighting the Motor’s City’s top experiences, hotels and restaurants, Lonely Planet further details what makes the city a must-visit, including their “Top choice” restaurant in Detroit: Dime Store.
Other best of Detroit destinations featured in the guide include the city’s top experience: a visit to Eastern Market, one of the country’s oldest farmer’s markets; and Detroit’s top sight: the Fisher Building, the nearly 90-year-old architectural gem that stands proudly over the city.
So which city beat out Detroit as the #1 best city to visit in 2018? That honor goes to Seville, Spain, a city the publication describes as a “Doorway to the Past.”
Thank you kindly for the honor, Lonely Planet. We love our city. #DetroitProud
